Catherine Worthington Art
I am a mixed media textile artist. I make textile “Art Quilts” for the wall. Working with textile paints on cloth I create colorful and highly textured, one of a kind patterned fabrics using a variety of surface design techniques. My process allows me to create a unique palette of fabrics to work with. For me knowing that I will be cutting up the pieces gives me the freedom to play and makes the process joyful. I use methods of collage to assemble my compositions, cutting and piecing the fabrics I have created and then stitch the layers together. The combination adds line and gives depth and dimension.
“As I explore the medium of textile painting I am often discovering the balance between abstraction and representation. Inspired by many walks in the woods, sailing on the coast or taking in the beauty of nature’s creations, I am compelled to create and capture its’ color, texture and charm.”
“My textile art quilts are interpretations of real places and I hope to capture the attention of the viewer by creating a feeling or familiar place to connect with.”
I grew up on the south shore of Massachusetts in a large family, oldest of six. I learned to sew at age seven and studied art in high school and college, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in textile design from U Mass in N. Dartmouth. I moved to Brunswick,Maine with my husband in 1988 where we have lived since and raised three boys. I worked as an artist mentor for adults with disabilities for over twenty years at Spindleworks in Brunswick. I started showing my textile art in local restaurants and doing art and craft shows about twenty three years ago and I am now working full time at my art, both making and teaching. I have taught surface design classes and workshops for adults and children locally and in schools throughout Maine. My textile art pieces are part of may private collections and have found permanent residences in three hospitals in Maine as well as churches. I am a member of Maine Crafts Association-guild level, Maine Fiber Arts, Designing Women and the Lemont Block Collective in Brunswick,Maine.
