Mark Zirinsky, Studio Z
A lifelong gem cutter, I accidentally began working with aluminum about 25 years ago, developing my own design, cutting and machining techniques. Inspired by natural form, I start with an abstract idea, develop a design, and then make the piece using a milling machine, machine engraving and hand carving for the final form, occasionally using other techniques (stamping, chiseling, mold making, inlay, faceting, fold forming, hydraulic press, hammering, many others). I engrave many lines to produce surface iridescence and reflections. A piece takes about 45 -180 hours each, about 80% machine time and 20% hand and design time. Made one at a time in my home studio from a single piece of metal, no mistakes. I limit my artistic tools to design, form, reflection and negative space. I particularly enjoy simple repetitions that coalesce into full sculptural statements. I measure artistic success in the moments or years a viewer spends with one of my pieces. Apparently Google knows more about my work than I do; If you Google my name, with the word artist, you’ll find some of my older works, exhibitions, museum shows, awards, etc. |
